Industrial Photography

The title of the industrial photography sector has altered little since Margaret Bourke-White was photographing factories the the late 1920s but the emphasis has changed.

Today clients are seeking to explain the science and technology behind their processes rather than just to admire the raw might of industrial complexes.

Certainly industrial and infrastructural projects present some of the most huge and potentially sublime vistas on the planet but we interpret them differently now. Our marveling at the heights of human ingenuity is generally tempered with concern over their ecological consequences.

What has not changed since Bourke-White’s day in industrial photography is the need to tell a story - to explain not just how something is happening but why.

The vast cathedral of concrete I photographed in ‘Tokyo’s Super Sewer’ is there to protect the city from floodwater as cyclones regularly Tokyo.

Photographed empty, as it has to be, it is merely a shell. The floodwater, the subject of the photograph, is missing.

So we need to be able to imagine what it feels like to be full of water, and the scale of a container large enough to syphon off rainwater from the streets of a conurbation the size of Tokyo.

What the task requires is an industrial photographer with the vision and technical skill to give the viewer enough of a clue for their imagination to fill in the gaps and grasp the scale of the industrial achievement lying hidden under the city. The result is as much a a work of industrial landscape photography as it is of industrial design photography.

I photograph complex industrial and infrastructure projects for corporate and design clients.

I photograph industrial manufacturing, industrial products and the people who make them.

I have photographed heavy industry and have experience in working in complex, busy and hazardous environments.

I have worked in a wide range of industrial settings including dams, power stations, factories, depots, and airports. I have created industrial heritage photography as well as industrial architecture photography and infrastructure photography.

I have undertaken construction photography for architects, construction companies, engineering companies and corporate clients.
